When talking about free speech in class I sometimes felt that we take our freedom for speech for granted. Back in the 1600's you couldn't speak bad about anyone or really publicly express your opinions. Women couldn't stand up for herself to her husband or say anything negative about him. Newspapers weren't a common thing and you certainly couldn't hold protests like you can today.
A lot of people complain about despite the fact that we have the freedom of speech it's still regulated by the government. And sure I have wondered why the government controls certain aspects of the first amendment. But if we all just took a step back and look at our history I think we can all realize how far we have come and that we have a great deal of freedom already.

I completely agree with you. Free speech does seem to be something that people really take for granted. I think if there were absolutely no regulations on what could be said and printed we would be in for some big trouble and probably tons of violence.
People also seem to forget that we do live in a country with a lot more freedoms than many other places....be grateful that we do live in a place where we can voice our opinions about the gov. whether its good or bad.
I agree with what you are saying. It seems as though we are becoming more and more spoiled. We have so many privileges that few in the world can boast of. With so many different cultures and beliefs in this country is it hard to imagine not having such freedoms as we do. Of course, the word "free" is relative and can change with context, but you're right, we have taken what we have for granted, myself included
